...ranch community of Parkfield, Calif. (pop. 34), has a more than 90% probability of being rocked within the next nine years by a tremor. Residents of the town, which lies along the San Andreas Fault, seem unconcerned. "We don't have any high-rise buildings," observes Duane Hamann, the hamlet's only schoolteacher. "We just better stay out from under the old oak tree...

...Hulk Hogan was playing Hamlet. That would be like asking Jim Brown if he kisses on the first date; you may think you know the answer, yet be reluctant to pose the question. You might not even want to have a little show- biz fun with the 6-ft. 8-in., 300-lb. Hulkster. Billy Crystal got away with it on Saturday Night Live, but Richard Belzer, the pencil-armed host of cable TV's Hot Properties, was not so lucky. Humberto Torres sat in a lean-to in a camp about 100 miles north of Managua last week, cradling the youngest of his five children, as he recalled his forced evacuation in March from Los Encuentros, a hamlet in northern Nicaragua. "The Sandinistas made us get out," he said, "because they told us they were going to destroy the houses." According to the reports, a time bomb apparently placed in one of the vehicles by a mujahedin sympathizer exploded, starting a fire that engulfed several tanker trucks. In the ensuing confusion, resistance fighters attacked and reportedly killed some 400 Soviet and Afghan soldiers and destroyed 80 vehicles...

Jordan, Minn., is a town of Rockwellian prettiness, nestled amid stands of hardwood trees and rolling bluffs. With its four churches, lagoon park and first-rate public school system, the Scott County hamlet (pop. 2,900), 35 miles from Minneapolis-St. Paul, would seem to be a model American community. But over the past year and a half, the town's idyllic image has been eroded by allegations of widespread sexual abuse of children. In all, 24 adults were charged by the local prosecutor with molesting 37 youngsters. Some of the defendants were couples accused of engaging in sexual activities...
