...wild-eyed Denver merchant corners Milgrim in a hallway and through clenched teeth mutters, "Don't think I don't know what's going on here. The filth, the filth." A legal secretary from Long Island expresses her distaste for Greek cuisine by insisting upon ham sandwiches and malted milks, and one cynic suggests that the ship is really a floating mental hospital, the stewards actually keepers, the passengers patients. Football was changing in 1909. The forward pass was starting to break in on the scene; and Harvard's own All-American Ham Fish was leading the way. In naming Fish to his 1913 All-time All-American team, Walter Camp termed him "a leader of men. The other was pressed within the Senate Judiciary Committee by Republican Strom Thurmond, the gentleman Torquemada from South Carolina. Thurmond continued to ham mer at an emotional, if elusive issue: pornography. He condemned the fact that Fortas had voted with the court majority in a 5-to-4 decision holding that a Los Angeles exhibitor did not violate the law with his raunchy films. The ruling made it easier for U.S. exhibitors...
