...Warner Bros., the left hand apparently careth not what the right hand doeth. The studio is distributing Monty Python's Life of Brian, the British comedy troupe's send-up of the Gospels that is widely condemned as blasphemous by Christians and Jews alike. But almost simultaneously, it is releasing another movie that will please the pious. This film, titled simply Jesus, is calculated to appeal to the most ardent biblical purists: all the action and virtually all the words spoken by the actors and off-screen Narrator Alexander Scourby are taken straight from the Gospel of Luke...

...George Stevens' overwrought 1965 The Greatest Story Ever Told. In this new film, there is no digression into the sexual enticements of Salome, no subplot on Barabbas, and no theorizing about the motives of Judas as in Franco Zeffirelli's TV Jesus of Nazareth. On the other hand, there is almost no character development, although Brian Deacon, an English actor, manages to portray a Christ who is much less mystical and more appealing than most of the previous celluloid renderings...

Their friendship would continue for 30 years and involve more than 3,300 letters 2,300 of them to Hick in Eleanor Roosevelt's scrawling hand. The letters, at Hickok's direction, ended up in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library with the proviso that they would not be opened until ten years after her death, which occurred in 1968. Many of them are included in The Life of Lorena Hickok, a biography by Doris Faber to be published by William Morrow & Co. in February. As a whole, they suggest an intimate relationship never previously considered...

...hand it to Lady Sarah Spencer-Churchill. Well, actually you don't, if you've got a DEMS, or Diver Equivalent Manipulator System, developed for underwater work by General Electric. DEMS makes its movie debut in ''Raise the Titanic!'', a film likely to become memorable only because it seeks to salvage the ill-fated liner for a change-rather than deep-six her again. In the movie the DEMS drops into waters unsafe for divers to repair the Titanic's hull. On the set, its operators insisted, DEMS was so sensitive...

...almost no one knew the name of the new captain of fives at Eton. The Times's famous letters-to-the-editor column was missed perhaps most of all. There was simply no other place to debate, as Times readers once did, how to keep one's hand warm in bed while reading (a concerned citizen's suggestion: slits in the bedclothes). Commented an Observer contributor last winter: "For those who were hooked on the Times, there is clearly no substitute. There is quiet, uncomprehending, slow-bubbling rage about its disappearance...
