According to the Tufts Trustees' Bylaws, the maximum probation period before tenure is six years, and Sayre has been at the Medford campus since 1957. The administration, however, based its action on a sliding scale of tenure explained in the Faculty Handbook. Under these rules, Sayre would have to undergo a seven-year probation period since his arrival at Tufts as an assistant professor, the title he still holds. But the Trustees have never offically approved the sliding-scale guidelines...

Bowler's Thumb. Internist Berry's handbook is an up-to-date endorsement of old-fashioned observation. When a patient has hands with swollen-tipped, "clubbed" fingers, and if there is also reddish-brown coloration to the skin at the base of the nails, says Dr. Berry, the man is suffering from cyanotic heart disease. "Blue babies" (with Fallot's tetralogy) develop similar signs, but when surgery has sealed the leak between the right and left sides of the heart, the clubbing and the discoloration dramatically disappear. If the pigmentation is not present, the spatulate fingers...

Hodgins' book is not only a chronicle of the embarrassments and irritations that confront the patient in any major illness; it is also a useful handbook for sympathetic friends. To a man of Hodgins' temperament too much consideration can be dangerous. He despises get-well cards, with or without bluebirds, and the standard bunch of flowers: "I am sorry to have to cross pistils with the nation's florists, but unless flowers are quite inexpensive and casually arranged, they are an insult. The more beautifully arranged, the deeper the insult...

...former French Congo and the hangout for exiled Congolese extremists plotting against the central government. There, Mulele presumably obtained funds and equipment from Red Chinese and Soviet agents, for when Congo police came upon Mulele's outposts, they found copies of Mao Tse-tung's handbook on guerrilla warfare, Soviet-made cameras, a combat radio, homemade gasoline bombs made from beer bottles-and two Russian fur hats. It was just such subversive activities as this that led Congo Premier Cyrille Adoula to expel Russia's entire 100-man mission from Leopoldville last November. Clearly, Moscow...

...less inhibited in bed-as just about everyone is urging them to be. As respectable an authority as Robert C. Dodds, a minister in the United Church of Christ, and General Director of Planning for the National Council of Churches, appends a chapter on sex practices to a marriage handbook, in which a physician urges couples to explore and "conjure up various positions and actions of sexual intercourse." Old taboos are slowly beginning to disappear, and while the upper and educated classes were always more adventurous in their techniques, sexual class lines show signs of fading. Reportedly declining are such...
