...years opponents of abortion have directed their energies toward overturning the hated decision. Now, with George Bush's capture of the presidency, many believe victory is almost at hand. "I think we see the end of the tunnel and the demise of Roe v. Wade," proclaims Clarke Forsythe, legal director of Americans United for Life. With the Republican win, insists John Willke, president of the National Right to Life Committee...

...peak vacation is a fable of compromises and calculations. On the one hand, there are bargains everywhere: Pan Am has a $398 round trip to London; Alitalia offers five nights in Rome for $99. On average, hotel and air-travel prices can be as much as 30% lower off-season. The trade-off, of course, comes in weather that ranges from unpredictable to appalling. While some resort towns remain mild well into the fall, northern cities turn gray and damp, and a visit requires a victory of mind over weather. ...Researchers have developed a vacuum device that produces an erection. The penis is sheathed in an acrylic tube, and a hand pump is used to force out air from around the penis. The resulting vacuum draws blood into the penis until it becomes rigid. Rubber bands are then slipped onto the base of the penis to keep the blood from escaping; the bands can be left in place safely for half an hour. The vacuum machine costs about $450. Urologist Perry Nadig of San Antonio has followed 340 of his patients who have used the device, some for as long...

What makes the Northwestern technique special is that virtually all the blood lost in an operation is salvaged. It is wrung out by hand from the saturated sponges directly into a bowl of saline solution. The solution is filtered and then passed into a centrifuge, where the red blood cells are separated. Within 15 minutes the reclaimed blood is back in circulation. Says Northwestern anesthesiologist Ann Ronai: "We're trying to salvage as much blood as possible during the operation, because it's better than somebody else's." The savings can be enormous: when the sponge method is combined with...
