...certain candidate’s individual qualities or ideals may align with the group’s particular ideology. Endorsements are indeed an important component of any democratic process, and should not be denigrated by any such red herrings that are irrelevant to the election at hand. Ultimately, we applaud and anticipate the extra days of this year's UC presidential election, and strongly urge the candidates to use the extension in new, creative, and effective ways so as to avoid the dismal voter turnout rates of the past...
...from their years at the Pentagon. Still far from clear is what role Joe Biden will play in this delicate arrangement. It was largely on the strength of his foreign policy credentials that Obama picked him to be Vice President. And the fact that he will be close at hand in the White House means Biden will certainly have the opportunity to weigh in on important policy questions. But no one expects him to be as big a force behind the scenes as Cheney has been or to seize entire portions of the portfolio for himself...
...million votes cast in the 2008 Minnesota Senate campaign will have been reviewed by hand, a month after challenger Al Franken and incumbent Norm Coleman were separated by just a few hundred votes on Election Day. There were machine counting, hand counting, ballot inspections, dispute over absentee votes, a powerful Florida secretary of state named Katherine Harris and enough hand-wringing that the transition between Bill Clinton and Bush was delayed by six weeks...
While it's unlikely that the military or ISI leadership would have been aware of, let alone sanctioned, the attack in Mumbai, India will see the Pakistani intelligence service as key to resolving a problem it had a strong hand in creating. Nor is the ISI's current orientation entirely unambiguous: the CIA recently confronted Pakistan with evidence of direct involvement by elements of the ISI in a July terror attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul. In response to the pressure resulting from the 2001 India parliament attack, the Pakistani security establishment appears to have tried to stand down...
