SENTENCED. MARK MANES, 22, to six- and three-year prison terms for selling a handgun to Dylan Klebold, one of the teens responsible for the massacre at Columbine, and for possessing a sawed-off shotgun; in Golden, Colo. At the sentencing hearing, transcripts of a videotape were read in which the killers thank Manes for "[helping] us do what we needed to do" but say he knew nothing about their plans...
...reply, Bradley talks about being tougher on handgun registration and campaign-finance reform, then says, "There's a set of differences that are a little deeper." He styles himself an outsider, talks about trust and tells about the Independents and Republicans who approach him in airports and hotel lobbies, saying, "I'd vote for you, but I'll never vote for him." His message: I can beat Bush; Gore, with all his baggage, never will. Bradley doesn't say whether those Independents and Republicans have heard about his unapologetically liberal platform. Legitimate gun owners see beyond the thinly veiled attempt to first demonize, then criminalize all gun ownership. God help us when only the police have the right to keep and bear arms. STEPHEN W. BORRON Paris...
...some polls. A Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll that has tracked the issue since 1990 found that in June 1999, only 62% of Americans favored stricter gun laws, compared with 78% in 1990. And a Gallup poll found that the percentage of people who believe the government should ban civilian handgun possession has fallen from 41% in 1981 to 38% in 1999. Perhaps a growing number of Americans have begun to realize gun-control laws do not make people safer. H. STERLING BURNETT NICOLE SCHIERECK National Center for Policy Analysis Dallas...
