Graffiti's adolescents were caught at a moment of subtle tension, when their comfortable pleasure with the familiar was challenged by their yearnings for a larger, more stimulating world-a world that scared them, yet beckoned them on into adulthood. Happy Days' teen-agers hang around the same drive-ins, drive the same hot-rods, listen to the same rock music, but otherwise bear no resemblance to Graffiti's kids. Instead they are the inheritors of the Henry Aldrich tradition, in which the awkwardness, sexual inexperience and general un-worldliness of youth are good only...
Woman do need sensitive, respectful treatment in gynocological and obstetrical matters. A sudden, sharp swing in the medical profession from near-total repression of sexual information to a "let's let it all hang out, girls" attitude is likely to furnish us with neither sensitivity nor respect. More dangerous, insistance on a particularly female diagnosis for a medical complaint could mask other unrelated medical problems. She begins taking down the garments, putting the clothespins in her pocket, when she sees out of the corner of her eye an airplane rising in the sky. A blouse flaps in her hand as she stares at the plane now soaring high above the slender office building...
...eccentrics. Eminent disregard for the conventional exposes our ridiculousness and negates this world's power to produce migraines, ulcers and hysteria. Contact with a true eccentric is essential to maintaining one's sanity. The few eccentrics I've known have rescued me from the brink of self-destruction. Eccentrics hang drying pumpkin and apple slices from their livingroom ceilings. They know the words to "God Save the Czar." They are experts on the Hapsburgs. They wear Wallabees. And, if they happened to have been extremely rich and Bostonian in the 1890s, they built Venetian palaces...
