...synch. Girls in their pre-teen years tend to mature faster than boys -- socially and sexually. Normal day-to-day interactions with these girls can be stressful and troubling for the boys, who tend to withdraw to a safe place -- sports, scouting, computer gaming -- where they can hang out until they are ready to hold their own with the girls, a process that can take years. Most home video games, unfortunately, are derived from coin-operated arcade models that were designed not to build up a lad's fragile ego but to defeat him and take away his quarters...

Mortal Kombat is not the first violent video game -- or even the worst. In Night Trap, a controversial compact-disc game that plays on the Sega system, five scantily clad women are stalked down by bloodthirsty vampires who like to drill holes in their victims' necks and hang them on meat hooks. I had a lot of time to think on the way down, and I promised myself that if I survived, I would figure...

Designing the new parachute was Popov's greatest challenge. Hang gliders weigh only 500 lbs., even if you include the pilot. A small Cessna, on the other hand, weighs more than 1,700 lbs., and a standard parachute big enough to float such a craft safely to the ground would fill up a 50-gal. drum. Not very practical. Undaunted, the BRS engineers figured out how to pack the parachute under pressure in such a way that it takes up no more space than a large briefcase and is mounted over the center of the wings. If the craft...
