...rule. (Atta was also given to long-sleeved silk shirts, whereas most of the other hijackers dressed conservatively--or, in the words of a former neighbor, "foreign preppy.") For the most part, they had learned American ways well after being here for so long: one of them, Hani Hanjour, who is believed to have piloted Flight 77 into the Pentagon, lived in the U.S. as long ago as 1990, when he took an English course in Arizona...
Last year, like more than 500,000 other foreigners, a man named Hani Hanjour used a student visa to enter the U.S. He had been accepted to an intensive English course run by ELS Language Centers at Holy Names College in Oakland, Calif., where the basic admission requirement is ability to pay the $1,325 fee. When classes began last November, Hanjour didn't show. Immigration officials, who rarely track the whereabouts of student visa holders, had no idea where he was. The FBI now believes he spent much of his time in San Diego and Maryland, trying to hone...
...back as 1996, at least two other men were following a similar course. Hani Hanjour, another of the eventual hijackers, was working with a CRM Airline Training Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. By 1999 Hanjour had accumulated enough hours--250--to fly with an FAA examiner for his commercial pilot's license. It was awarded and issued that same year. Khalid Al-Midhar, Majed Moqed, Nawaq Alhamzi, Hani Hanjour and Salem Alhamzi embarked on American Flight 77 out of Dulles and swung it around to smash into the Pentagon at 9:40 a.m. The cockpit voice recorder that might have clarified whether this plane intended to take out the White House or the Capitol was found too badly...
...beautiful and interesting excursions, the country outside Jinghong provides endless choices. Walkers can enjoy jungle jaunts along the Mekong and through Dai or Hani villages (see DETOUR). The main draw is the cultural diversity of tribal minorities. Predominantly populated by the Buddhist Dai, Banna is ethnically linked to the hill tribes of Laos, Burma and northern Thailand. Other smaller groups in the area are the Hani and Lahu peoples, mainly of Tibetan stock. Known for their hospitality and resistance to assimilation, the indigenous cultures provide a color and individualism very different from that found in other, more monolithic parts...
