TIME, April 29 (National Affairs, "Death of De Boe") unfairly calls Mr. Phil Hanna "a professional executioner . . . from Illinois," unkindly cuts his visage three-quarters away in the accompanying picture of ''Robber-not a Rapist'' De Boe. No professional, no executioner, Mr. Hanna is a gentleman farmer who lives on land that has been in the family since 1808. . . . He has assisted at some 65 hangings (he does not recall the exact number), has never sprung a trap. Years ago, the revolting sight of a public strangulation as a result of an incorrectly tied noose...
Because of "the infirmity of advancing years," San Francisco's Catholic Archbishop Edward Joseph Hanna, 74, announced last week that he is retiring. A onetime theology professor suspected of "modernism," he became Bishop in 1912, Archbishop in 1915. Of the 18 U. S. Catholic Archbishops, he was the one most frequently mentioned for the Cardinal...
Such was the Folsom situation when Major Roy Gregg Coffin of Colorado Agricultural College and his brother made a find in a dry arroyo that brought Dr. Frank Harold Hanna Roberts on the run from the Smithsonian Institution. Extending over a half-mile, the site was apparently once a lush pasture where Pleistocene animals, following the retreating...
Ohio's late great Marcus Alonzo ("Mark") Hanna fathered one son and one newspaper. In 1910, the son, Daniel Rhodes Hanna, acquired what was left of the newspaper, which had been absorbed in the Cleveland News. Later he handed the News on to his three sons, Daniel Jr., Carl & Mark. Last week big, blond Dan Hanna Jr., who worked his way up from pressroom apprentice to publisher, did something his grandfather would have approved. He signed an employment contract with the American Newspaper Guild...
