Into the Midwest. Nor are bigger operators immune from pressures, as Korvette's experience plainly shows. Though Founder Eugene Ferkauf revolutionized retailing with his approach to discounting (TIME cover, July 6, 1962), Korvette's haphazard management was not equal to its ambition of simultaneously upgrading merchandise, adding new services and expanding the New York-based chain into the midwest. To check his chain's decline, Ferkauf last year merged into apparel-making Spartans Industries (which has promised the Federal Trade Commission to sell its own 96 Spartan-Atlantic discount stores) and turned over the reins to Spartans...

Buckley Sr. subjected his children to a rigorous, if haphazard education. Unimpressed by the schools as he moved from Venezuela to France to England and back to the U.S. (Sharon, Conn., where Mrs. Buckley Sr. still lives), he stressed education at home. Not the kind of businessman who sneered at the liberal arts, he hired tutors in dance, architecture, painting, herb gardening, and one who was expert at building boats inside bottles. "We thought we had tried about everything," recalls Bill, "and in would come yet another professor." All the children were trilingual, or at least bilingual. Bill learned...

...Their troubles are a source of particular concern because architects and developers alike feel that the best of the projects could teach the whole country how to surround homes with a more pleasant environment. Moreover, planners consider new towns a promising antidote to the suburban sprawl. Such haphazard building, they say, could wreck the countryside as the U.S. doubles its stock of housing over the next 30 years...

Coordination between the two forces was haphazard, this due to Schmidt's sacrificing clarity of beat in favor of a continuous, feverish intensity of motion. He huffed and he puffed, he grimaced with grief, he smiled with beatific joy. Sometimes he succeeded (usually in fortissimo passages), but most often he was unable to convey any unified conception of this difficult and eccentric master-piece. Of the four vocal solists, Barbara Wallace...

Gone Fishing. Equally haphazard is Shelburne's general store, a zany montage of barbershop, country doctor's office, dentist's cubicle, post office and taproom whose shelves are laden with jars of candy and patent nostrums. A faint smell of peppermint is always in the air, and outside the door hangs a hand-painted sign: "Gone fishing be back Monday mebbe." The schoolhouse combines a dunce cap made from an 1868 newspaper with wall drawings made by Lincoln-era schoolchildren and period mottoes written on the blackboard: "People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages...
