A philosopher tells Chan-tse that he was actually a butterfly in his former life and was probably a lot happier without the nagging of his current wife. Chan-tse pretends to be dead in a cemetery. When his wife arrives at his coffin with a lover, Chan-tse rises up and scares her away forever. Thus freed, he becomes the butterfly he always wanted...
Dorms are discouraging places for boys to visit. They have to be stared at by 100 girls to get to see one. All the apparatus of bells, pink slips, tags, and signing in for parietals makes it a Special Occasion every time a boy comes, when everyone would be happier if it could be Just Dropping By. Girls are supposed to yell "Man on" when they bring their visitors upstairs and put a sign on the door after they have evacuated their roommate to leering suppositions underlying these procedures put the focus on just what the authorities are presumably trying...

Gaunt Max von Sydow, for example, plays the archteypal Bergman male--weak and childish, incapable of even killing a hen for supper, leaning on Liv Ullman, his strong loving wife (much like Gunnar Bjornstrand and Eva Dahlbeck in a happier film, Smiles of a Summer Night). Here, too, the estranged couple is at the end reunited. But even these familiar touches are now used in a new way. The dialogue more than ever belongs to the characters, not to Bergman. Bergman has been released from the grip...
