...baseball team spent most of the afternoon yesterday in batting practice at the nets and on the diamond. The pitching was done by Stillman, Kernan, MacDonald and B. A. Hayes '98. The men showed improved form in batting and made a number of clean, hard drives. Wendell's backstop work was good, but he was weak in throwing to second. Reid's throwing to bases was remarkably swift and accurate. The fielding practice was sharp and more accurate than on Tuesday. Kendall, though fairly sure on thrown balls, is still very weak in fielding batted balls, and his throwing yesterday...
...from the beginning, and for a class game was fairly well played. The Seniors took the lead in the first inning by hitting Stickney's pitching at will. Laverack, however, took his place in the second inning and proved very effective, especially with men on bases. McCornick was hit hard, but with better support would have won the game. In the eighth inning the Juniors made four runs on a combination of hits and errors and secured a safe lead. The features of the game were the fine all-round playing of Putnam, the batting of Rainbolt, and a pretty...
...showing of the Freshmen in the practice against the University nine yesterday was not encouraging, but this was due more to lack of practice caused by the recent bad weather than to a reversal of form. Sherlock, a recent addition to the team, is a fair fielder and a hard hitter and adds some strength to the nine. Brown '03 is stronger than most of the teams which the Freshmen have played, and the game should be close...
...preliminary heats of the interscholastic boat races were rowed on the Charles Saturday afternoon. The course was a little less than a mile, starting just above Harvard Bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. Rough water and the hard rain made good rowing difficult. The first heat was won by Brookline High School with Waltham High second. Hopkinson won the second heat easily, after a very poor start, and Brown and Nichols finished second. In the third heat the water became smoother, and the race was a hard fight between Noble and Greenough's and Stone's, in which...
...Hard, consistent batting is the feature of Princeton's work, and has won games against Lawrenceville, Brown and Cornell during the past week. In the last two games every man on the team hit safely, Burke and Meier batting especially well. In base-running the team is doing better work than at any previous time this season. Princeton played an errorless game against Lawrenceville and made but one error in the Cornell game, but in the Georgetown and Brown games the team showed a tendency to go to pieces. Hillebrand was very effective against both Brown and Cornell, and Lawrenceville...
