...Varsity resulted in three touchdowns in the second half against the second eleven, who used the Pennsylvania defense. Towards the end of the practice, the first eleven gained at will through the second. All the men are in fine condition and were not seeming over-taxed by the long, hard work of the afternoon. In the preliminary practice Reid's punting was good, and he played throughout the game. Assisting Coach Dibblee in uniform, were Cranston, Lewis, and Waters, Fairchild, and W. C. Forbes...
With the Brown game only two days distant, the practice yesterday consisted of two hard halves against the second eleven, twenty and ten minutes long respectively. Although the defense was strong enough to hold the second for downs as often as the latter got the ball, the team work on the offensive was somewhat ragged. Not only were the men very careless about getting off before the ball, but also four times in the course of the practice the 'Varsity was penalized for offside play. The most encouraging feature of the practice was the brilliant playing of the tackles. Although...
Merriman, who during the first half gave Donald some hard playing, replaced Eaton on the 'Varsity toward the end of the practice. Notwithstanding his weight, he plays a quick, active game. Donald strengthened the other side of the line very much. Lewis, right tackle on the second, made some brilliant plays...
Yesterday's matches were the most interesting that have as yet been played. In the first set of the Roche-Thomas match, Thomas frequently passed Roche by his long hard driving and clever back work. He was not able to keep up his game, however, and soon became erratic, with the result that Roche won easily in the second and third sets. Ward and Davis won the match with Lang and Bowdoin in two rather one-sided sets in which there was not much opportunity for scientific playing, the points being usually settled in a few strokes. The next match...
Harvard's offense was irregular throughout. After long runs by Sawin, and hard line-plunging by Hurley, Warren and Ellis, a costly fumble, or offside play would give the ball to Bates, and lessen the chances for a touchdown. Hurley and Sawin were the only backs who went into the line low. The hurdling style of Ellis and Warren, although effective yesterday, will not gain ground against a strong team. In the back-field, Sawin did excellent work. He outpunted Putnam repeatedly and by following his interference well, made several long runs...
