...egghead commentary. There's also lots of blood and guts and campy overdone sex scenes in the film, most of which involve poor Lucy (Sadie Frost), the character who is ravished by Dracula in some of his less appealing forms. Meanwhile, back at the castle, a bevy of vampire harem girls keep Keanu Reeves, er, too weak to escape. Like Anne Rice's Interview With a Vampire, "Dracula" gives vampirism an allegorical overtone of sexuality out of control. Periodic shots of blood cells under a microscope underscore the linkage of vampirism, sex, corruption, death, and, you guessed it, AIDS...

...Christian Vincent's LA DISCRETE is no frivolous American sex comedy; it is French, in the best sense of the word. With breathless poise, the script by Vincent and Jean-Pierre Ronssin juggles cruelty and gaiety, revealing modern man as a ruthless appraiser auditioning women for his imaginary harem. Hollywood wouldn't know what to do with a film so airy, so grave. Poetry is what gets lost in transatlantic remakes...

Some of the works in the show, such as the harem carriage -- a gilt coach designed with lattice windows so that women could look out discreetly -- have never traveled outside Turkey. The exhibition's most stunning item is the Topkapi Dagger, featured in the 1964 movie Topkapi. Created in the 1740s as a gift for the Shah of Persia, who was assassinated before he could take possession, it is a sword-length blade that is more a showpiece than a weapon. Who would want to bloody a knife with a hilt containing three walnut-size emeralds and a diamond-covered...

Peter Sellers' Inspector is one of the film world's classic comedic protagonists. Each place and each person who comes into contact with Clouseau becomes helplessly embroiled in the Inspector's mad, inside-out universe of erector-set winged cars, Disguises by Balls, and Cato's Asian Harem. Of course, Herbert Lom, as Clouseau's nemesis on the Paris police force, is unable to snap back from these trips into madness and spends most of the film locked in a padded room...

...share of history, good and bad. Maida was plundered frequently in pre-Christian times. The rebel slave Spartacus led his ragtag army through the area during his ill-fated battles with the legions of imperial Rome. The medieval German Emperor Frederick II, surrounded by a retinue that included his harem, passed by en route to the Sixth Crusade. And older men in Maida still recalled the day Garibaldi and his Redshirts rode through the village, vowing to free the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from lethargic Bourbon rule...
