These low numbers do a huge disservice to The Crimson and ethnic groups on campus alike. They harm the relationships between the two and as a result, opportunities are missed. For example, the UNITY organization that conducted the survey hosts a national conference each summer for all journalists of color that is open to both professionals and students. It is a wonderful opportunity to create valuable contacts, and this past summer it included speeches by both President Bush and presidential candidate John Kerry. Not a single Crimson staff member was in attendance. Perhaps if there were more minorities on staff...
...because the purpose of holding an election now is to secure the all-important legitimacy of a popular mandate for a new government to stabilize Iraq. By that measure, an election whose credibility is questioned by substantial sections of the Iraqi population and the international community could do more harm than good. And the prospect of the January deadline producing a flawed election has led observers from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Jordan's Crown Prince Abdullah to Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry to urge a postponement. Would you rather your kid be miserable in class every day just so he can get his driver's license at the same time as everyone else...
...long run, bowing out prematurely would only compound America’s troubles in the war on terror. Strategically, it would cause irreparable harm to U.S. credibility. In addition, the environment likely to result from a failed Iraqi state is precisely the kind in which terrorist groups would thrive. What is needed, though, is not a continuation of the failed strategy of Secretary Rumsfeld’s Pentagon. Instead, we must continue to look for new methods to minimize casualties and damage. Rule of law must be emphasized above all to distinguish the new government from regimes of the past...
