Usage:

Such activity east of the Rhine, though dramatic evidence of Germany's astonishing comeback, did at least as much harm as good. The No. 1 obstacle to EDC is French fear of German arms; the more eager the Germans are to have them, the less willing are the French to let them have them. "Chancellor Adenauer is a man of high conscience," said Edouard Herriot, President of the French National Assembly, in a bitter speech last week. "But he is there for four years, and the treaty we are asked to sign is for 50 years." A German countered...

...common standard: whether the risk involved is worth the possible value of such a person to the Review. If we knew that Lubell was not directed to infiltrate the Review for subversive purposes; if we knew he was not goin to use the experience he gains to harm the legal profession; we would then be the first to urge he not be isolated from influence merely because of his political views. But we cannot believe this, for he will not deny it under oath. Because of this, the risk is substantial. And the success and reputation of the Law Review...

The truism you mouth, that "mere academic success entitles him to neither a forum for ideology or an instrument for hidden purposes" successfully skirts a disclosure of the technique by which the Review Notes are composed, thus denying your readers an unassisted evaluation of the risk of harm created. Sten gunners of the imperial guard fired a burst at ben Abdallah; he quivered, then died. Sultan Arafa, unhurt, turned to his aides and said "Sibismaken" (No harm done). Then he proceeded calmly into the mosque and thanked Allah for deliverance-this time...

...heartening to know that Reinhold Niebuhr not only has at last seen the evils of Marxism but has been man enough to confess it [TIME, Aug. 24]. On the other hand, the harm he has done to the American Protestant clergy is incalculable, for not only is he the key man at Union Theological Seminary, but the outstanding leader in the revival of theology in most of our denominations. Thousands of ministers have been soft toward Communism because of their own Marxist illusions. It is to be hoped that many of them will now follow Dr. Niebuhr in his repentance...
