Alberto Giacometti looks like a tormented Chico Marx; he also sculps and paints with the bug-eyed fury of a Harpo, and creates things undreamed of even in Groucho's philosophy. But the part of a dying consumptive is played incongruously by hefty Ann Avars (who uses her own voice), and Britain's glamorous Pamela (The Lady's Not for Burning) Brown is made to look like a shorn Harpo Marx so that she can play Hoffmann's male companion. Even the performers who appear to advantage represent a disturbing clash of acting styles, e.g., Singer-Actor Rounseville plays for movie naturalism, while Actors Robert Helpmann and Leonide Massine, who are ballet dancers with little dancing...

Coincidences. Gangsters paraded to the witness stand, but they were about as garrulous as Harpo Marx. Politicians gossiped about each other like a roomful of society cats, but gave no sharp picture of corruption...

...Harpo's fans, at least two sequences should be enough to make the barren patches endurable. In one, the zany mute tramp leads three villains in a chase across the mid-Manhattan skyline, capering in & out of huge electric advertising displays that are ingeniously rigged to help him elude pursuit. The other sequence makes him the prisoner of international jewel thieves headed by Ilona Massey, whose decolletage plunges low enough to give even Hollywood a touch of the bends...
