...evening I arrived there, we drank ale out of large goblets and I watched Harriet light the kerosene lamps. I tried to picture the upper middle class high school cheerleader my cousin had married. I remembered his spacious Coral Gables house with its electronic gadgetry and heated swimming pool and compared it to the room I sat in, scented with burning wood and plump pork chops, sizzling in the old-fashioned black oven. The small wooden farm house had neither electricity nor running water. One room served as the living room, dining room, kitchen and pantry. A ladder...
...gentle way, the show changed television's image of women. During the pleistocene era of Ozzie and Harriet or Donna Reed, the women, in skirts curiously bouffant for housework, had to make their witticisms in or near the kitchen, lest the chocolate-chip cookies burn. Mary Tyler Moore, playing Rob Petrie's wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66), wore tighter dresses but was a thoroughly suburban housewife: Rob went to work, Laura worried about the pet duck catching cold...
...Make a list of what to do today. "A total woman sets aside time to plan carefully." Also brush the teeth frequently, and use dental floss. "Be touchable and kissable." Her company, Fragments, grossed more than $1 million last year-60% of it in New York City. Her biggest hit has been the Fragments Bag, which holds seven basic separates-six of Qiana jersey-in a range of compatible colors that can be combined to make about 100 different outfits. Also in the bag: a see-through chiffon blouson top and, egad, a silver necklace with a cylinder that holds a toothbrush. From...
Fortunately for director Ralph Gibson and the audience, the Leverett House production features a cast of talented musical-comedy actors and actresses who manage to keep the aimless plot amusing. Although Burnett's humor set the pace in the original production, Harriet Mermes's appealingly Klutzy and earthy Winifred does not carry the show. Mermes's best moment occurs in the second act, when she has the stage to herself as she attempts to fall asleep. She yawns and stretches and mugs her way to bed only to be foiled by the pea under her mattresses...
