Curator Mark Harrington of the Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, considers the house "the most interesting and exciting Pinto Man discovery to date." He thinks it was built about 8,000 years ago, when the Mojave Desert was a wooded, fertile land, teeming with game. The people who lived in it were obviously no mere nomads, but led a semi-settled life, probably living in tight little clans. No cooking had been done in the house, but near it was the charcoal and burned-bone fragments of a large campfire site, apparently shared by several families...

If Harrington finds bones of animals around the ancient hearths, he will be better able to fix the date of the "Pinto culture." Bones of American camels, or long-horned bison, for instance, would prove that the camp site was inhabited in the late glacial period. If he finds a fair set of human bones, he may establish Pinto Man's relation to other Early Americans, and to the latter-day low-cultured Indians who lived in Southern...

...rule, did. As such smart merchandisers as Walter Hoving (see below) and the Ford Motor Co.'s Albert Browning left, they jokingly formed the "Has-Been Club." In due time they took in 21 Ward has-been presidents and top executives. Not till Vice President Wilbur Harrington Norton, 44, became president in 1946 did Chairman Avery have someone who was ready to dish out rough treatment as well as take...
