...hardly a call to arms, and Jagger was much assailed for his "indecision"; indeed, an audience in Berkeley booed him for flashing both the peace sign and the clenched-fist power salute. But now that political pop is dead, the harsh, narcissistic irony of the Stones has lasted better than the maunderings of cult heroes like Abbie Hoffman or Jerry Rubin. In a sense, the Stones have lasted well because they never believed that a millennium was just around the corner. The presiding spirit in the Stones' lyrics is neither Marcuse nor Thoreau, but William Burroughs...
Though many of Mobutu's 21.5 million countrymen may giggle at their new names, most of them respect the President's motive: to give them something of their own to be proud of. They felt degraded by Belgium's harsh colonialism under which they were called macaques (apes) and treated as backward children. Mobutu's "authenticity" campaign, going back as it does to their own precolonial tribal roots, at least gives them something to hold...
...I.R.A. and the U.D.A. were clearly under pressure from the peacemakers, there was still the chance of sectarian conflict erupting again. But meanwhile, British officials pondered ways of negotiating an end to the no-go barricades. Whitelaw was as usual unabashed by the task, even if he chose a harsh simile to express his confidence. Heroin use in Japan has been virtually eliminated by stringent enforcement of a 1963 law that provided for harsh handling of both pushers and addicts. A life sentence is meted out for selling butsu (the Japanese gangsters' untranslatable coinage for heroin). Mere possession can mean several years in jail. To cut off the demand, the government required that every user caught be confined for at least 30 days of treatment. The most Draconian fact-by American standards-is that each addict's treatment begins with "cold turkey," or withdrawal unassisted by chemical crutches such as methadone...
...Nutt, this imagery of possession enters a horrific level of sour humor. Nutt is the more playful. His drawing appears to derive equally from Dick Tracy strips (the thin, grotesque, saber-edged line) and back-of-the-comic ads for hemorrhoid cures. The result is a mildly purgative vulgarity, harsh and sexy and comic all at once-a visual equivalent to the kind of sub-Burroughs imagery one gets in some Rolling Stones lyrics. Says Nutt: "I don't know what you mean by 'vulgar.' My women are dream women...
