...felt more than a few closet doors opening in response, oiled in part by television. It was a new, resurgent Mondale; a new, optimistic group of Democratic leaders, Dan Rather assured us. Of course, after the New Hampshire primary, Rather said to Gary Hart something to the effect of, "Isn't it safe to say now that you will be the Democratic nominee?" No, it wasn't too safe to say that, and it may well be even less safe to say that Mondale will prevail...

...sort of shot-in-the-arm is needed for the much-maligned Mondale candidacy, these debates should provide it. Though the shrinking ranks of college-age voters who remain Democrats went largely for Sen. Gary W. Hart (D-Colo.) in the spring primaries, the time has come not only to support Fritz Mondale, but to support him with open arms. There is no excuse to hide behind the traditional criticisms of Mondale--he's boring, backward-looking, etc.--because, as Sunday's debate showed, the perception of glamor and excitement is about as deep as the celluloid it's projected...

Others are skeptical about an enduring shift. "The youth vote is reacting to what it perceives as a healthy economy and to the mythic leadership of Reagan," says Democratic Pollster Hart. "It is not a bellwether for the future." Murray Fishel, a Kent State University political scientist, notes that young voters are more liberal on social issues than Reagan or his party. "Students do not support the Republican platform on issues like the environment or the Equal Rights Amendment," he says. "I think the shift is toward Reagan and not Reaganism." But whether fickle or faithful, the enthusiasm of young...

...weekly was widely and rightly praised for its perceptive coverage of this year's presidential campaign by Morton Kondracke, 45, and especially by Sidney Blumenthal, 35, in his early definition of Gary Hart's appeal as the Big Chill candidate. In a Republican Convention wrapup, Blumenthal wrote, "Reagan is Miller Time, Mondale is the factory whistle . . . In the end, Americans want the pursuit of happiness, not blood, sweat and tears. Almost always, the party of leisure wins elections. In recent history, that is usually the party of deficits...
