Fear the Devil. The bumper harvest brought a big problem to all U.S. wheat farmers, and it was not the weather; it was what to do with the crop. There was no place to store it. Most of the nation's bins and elevators were still bulging with last year's wheat. The situation in Texas was typical: there was enough storage space to hold around 140 million bushels, but three-fifths of it was already filled with 1948 wheat and grain sorghums. That meant there was only room for this year's first 55 million bushels...
...Harvest. Today, at 51, Pfister is the president and major stockholder of a bank which once refused him a loan. He employs 107 full-time workers, and in the weeks of "detasseling" (just before the strains are pollinated) recruits 1.500 helpers from nearby high schools. His payroll is $400,000 a year, the value of his land and equipment $1,800,000. He is a smart businessman and works hard at it, but looks tired and bored in his office. His eyes light up only when he gets out in a field...
...next two weeks, the HTW will offer Cambridge an opportunity to see its last and most enjoyable production, "The Tempest"--a production which manages to reap the full harvest of marvels contained in that play. They Workshop has never yet failed to repay, with interest, the exacting price Shakespeare demands of his actors.
