...Harvey Fierstein, in drag as Tracy's battleship mom (the role played by Divine in the movie), is Hairspray's showstopping centerpiece. But somewhere between his flouncy scenery chewing (with a chainsaw voice that is now painful to hear) and the familiar gags about uptight parents and butch gym teachers, Hairspray starts to lose its fizz. Making fun of the '50s and '60s has become so passe that this cartoon version gets old pretty fast. The smiley social commentary--Tracy meets the school's black kids in detention and discovers that they have rhythm--only makes the show's facetiousness...

...time I put Nash aside for Ernie Kovacs, Harvey Kurtzman, Lenny Bruce and the more aggressive comic geniuses of that decade, For I had determined that wit needed to explode, not simmer, and that a good joke was one so convulsively head-turning that it sent you to the hospital for swiveling-neck aid, And that it was harder to be funny than to be droll, as it is harder to create a joke than a platitude, Since a comedian requires ingenuity, while a humorist can coast on a querulous attitude. "When we gave them a bad review they refused to carry our books. That kind of behavior can make reviewing these restaurants a delicate situation." Harvey Nichols' Dominic Ford points out that the store carries only two restaurant guidebooks, including the Zagat Survey, which gave his restaurant a mixed review. "I would not refuse to stock a book based on a bad review," says Ford. "I have just chosen...

That's the business; how's the food? For the most part, both ambitious and good. But restaurant critics have pretty much ignored this in-store phenomenon - Le Chênevert, which has been awarded high marks by reviewers, and Harvey Nichols' Fifth Floor being the exceptions. Harrods chef Chris Allen, who learned his trade in some of London's most prestigious eateries, can't get anyone to review his Georgian Restaurant. "We're doing an incredibly high level of food," he says, as he gently stirs a lobster sauce for a salmon en croute dish. "Critics just...
