Oakland, Calif. As for your statement '"that only one prisoner has escaped since 1858," why try to compare a military prisoner to a criminal prisoner? The military prisoner hasn't the friend and money for which to spring him while, as the records show, the criminal prisoner uses friend, money and all other types of schemes to make his escape. Remember, the Golden Gate does not always see the beautiful sunset but is enveloped in a heavy fog a great number of days during the year. A prisoner with enough "guts'' could on one of these...
Without apparent effort, S. N. Behrman has created the most amusing comedy that has come to Boston in many years. He hasn't satirized the life of an artist, nor has he burlesqued it. Yet without relying on low comedy or the pseudo-intellectual repartee of Noel Coward, which evokes laughter from the "sophisticated,"--an obnoxious word--he has patterned a delightful play around a series of commonplace situations. John Healey is another excellent prospect, though, due partly to injuries, he hasn't seen as much action lately as the other three. Schumann and Gulian appear to have the inside track at the present time. Gundlach, however, has the advantage of experience, while Gulian is on the injured list...
...five others announced they would close this week. Reason given: With the 4.2? processing taxes and higher NRA wages they cannot continue manufacturing unless sales keep up-which they have not. Said the American Wool & Cotton Reporter last week: "Business is better. The mills are running well. But there hasn't been anything sold now for three weeks. The mills bought raw material to get in ahead of inflation, the garment manufacturers bought piece goods for the same reason, but neither are mills buying raw material now nor garment manufacturers piece goods...
