...repercussions of the Israel-P.L.O. agreement spread quickly throughout the region. On his way home from the signing ceremony, Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin stopped off in Morocco for an unprecedented meeting with King Hassan II; diplomatic relations may follow. Jordan and Israel signed an agreement laying out the framework for their own peace discussions. But Rabin lambasted Syria for allowing anti-Israel guerrillas to continue to operate in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip three Israeli soldiers were ambushed and killed and a Palestinian blew himself up in a botched attack on an Israeli police station...
They prefer softer names, like Islamists or fundamentalists, but these were trained killers. They loaded their bomb on a motorcycle and slipped it between two parked cars on a narrow, tree-shaded street outside the American University campus in downtown Cairo. As Interior Minister Hassan al-Alfi's black Peugeot rolled past, the terrorists triggered the bomb, blasting ball bearings at the Minister's motorcade and passersby on the crowded sidewalk...
Four people were killed and at least 15 injured in an attempt to assassinate Egypt's Interior Minister, Hassan al-Alfi, who has led a crackdown on Islamic militants. Reportedly, Iran agreed to provide Sudan with oil and technical aid in exchange for Sudanese livestock and wheat and promised to send Iranian Revolutionary Guards to train Sudanese Popular Defense Forces. U.S. officials say the Guards also offered instruction in subversion and guerrilla warfare for would-be terrorists...
...Hizballah's top leaders show no signs of mellowing when they speak of their enemies. While Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, who took over as secretary- general last year after the Israelis killed his predecessor, opposes kidnapping Westerners, he scorns the U.S. "They are primarily responsible for all Israeli crimes," he says. His deputy, Sheik Naim Qassim, says last week's Israeli attacks will have no effect on Hizballah. "None of us is afraid to die," he says. "Our principles and aims are more important than our lives." Those aims include driving the Israelis from southern Lebanon and seeking...
