Someone came up with the less-than-brilliant idea of slapping a '50s-retro veneer on all the singers' clothes and gestures. Rigoletto in hat and coat recalls Willy Loman with a hump; Gilda sports a flaring gray poodle-skirt, a bright red cardigan sweater and ponytail tied with a matching red ribbon. The duke, when he comes a-courting, looks sublimely ridiculous in a red monogrammed vest. Even the courtship scene between the duke and Gilda is straight out of the '50s, reminiscent of that porch swing on a summer night--a worthy tradition...
Shewchuk topped the Crimson's scoring list with six power play goals, five short-handed goals, four hat tricks, ten multiple-goals games, and was tied for the lead with three game winning tallies. His sardonic commentary and constant observations on the rest of the play draw the line between the fantastic and the real, bringing the viewpoint of a modern, cynical viewer into the play. In his battered black suit, derby hat and worn-out umbrella, Burt-Kinderman's Jacques seems a cross between Charlie Chaplin and one of Beckett's existentially confused wanderers from Waiting for Godot. Her razor-sharp portrayal electrifies the play. Deftly handling Jacques's bitter one-liners, she also does an unusually effective job with the play...
