...Ultimately, the U.S. may be right to allow the Iraqis to decide Saddam's fate for themselves. But this is no time for triumphalism. It should shame both Americans and Iraqis to hear a man as repugnant as Saddam presenting himself as a uniter and imploring Iraqis "not to hate." Executing Saddam won't extinguish those fires of hatred any more than it will relieve the pain of his victims. Only when Iraqis build a decent, humane society at peace with itself will they be able to erase the memory of the crimes for which Saddam died...

...though the prospect presents huge problems for them. Any fighters who come to Hamed's aid are likely to include Sunni militants with some degree of affinity for al-Qaeda in Iraq or the insurgency. Hamed acknowledges as much, and he tells Cartee again and again that he'd hate to end up on the wrong side of the Americans. ...fight against catastrophic global warming. Trouble with that is, I was in three places this week where it is usually cold this time of year - Massachusetts, New York and Chicago - and in all three places people were remarking upon how nice and warm it was. Hard to hate, this global warming. Why can't it be global stinking, or global choking, that we're succumbing to? Then we (You) could feel like rallying behind a bold leader...
