...asking movie stars questions that are supposed to sound like congratulations. Then the stars leave and you have to talk to your fellow journalists. Of course, all they want to talk about is how rotten it is to be at Cannes. Which is boring too. Don't you just hate complainers...

...pleased that columnist Joe Klein mentioned BBC interviewer Jeremy Paxman in his article on Tony Blair's election campaign [May 2]. Paxman's pointed questioning of Blair about the Iraq war is exactly the kind of journalism that politicians hate: relentless pressure for direct answers. Over the years several interviewees have actually walked out of sessions because of Paxman's rigorous approach--the kind of tough-style journalism that the U.S. media need to adopt. They are far too deferential to U.S. politicians and let them get away with misleading answers. It would be a joy to see Paxman grill...

...great American obesity epidemic has given rise to its own literary sub-genre. You could call it Chunk Lit: memoirs of the overweight. This wicked, paradoxically lean example chronicles McClure's overeating, her love-hate cycles with Weight Watchers, her rationalizations ("Everyone says Rene Zellweger looks hotter in that one movie"). And what it's like to binge, postbreakup, on hamburger buns sprayed with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!: "It is like a sandwich ... made of emptiness and disbelief." I'm Not the New Me is, in every way, tastier and more filling than that...
