...unexpected tax haul enabled Budget Director Charles L. Schultze, 40, a former University of Maryland economics professor who took over the job on June 1, to close the books on the world's largest budget with a deficit of $3.8 billion, $2.5 billion below January estimates and the smallest deficit since 1960. It also pleased-and puzzled-Treasury Secretary Henry Fowler and caused the Treasury to begin a re-examination of its entire estimating procedure. Says Fowler: "If there had to be that big an error, I'd much rather have it on the plus side than...
Rival Images. Britain pushed for more orders for its short-haul BAC One-Eleven jet, which faces stiff competition from Boeing's new 737 and Douglas' DC-9, and its BAC Super VC 10, which seeks to crack the domination of Boeing's 707 and Douglas' DC-8 in the European long-haul market. Then, too, huge new deposits of high-grade ore that could be transported cheaply have been discovered in under developed countries. Result: waterside plants that are free...

More than 85% of all buyers order a mowing attachment with their tractor; after that, they may choose other accessories that blow away or plow snow, roll and aerate lawns, haul logs, sweep driveways, bull doze dirt, and even forklift heavy loads. Inevitably, luxury optionals have been introduced: cigarette lighters, headlights for nighttime mowing, can opies and padded seats...
...m.p.h. in level flight; with ducts rotated to a vertical position, the ship should operate like a helicopter. If it all adds up to the impressive capabilities that were planned by computer and drawing board, the X-22A may point the way toward a new generation of short-haul transports...
