...Greyhound buses that shuttle gamblers daily from California to the casinos on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Half an hour out of Sacramento, the man shoved a pistol into the ribs of the driver and ordered a passenger to go through the bus collecting wallets and purses. The haul was only $835, but it reflected a savvy knowledge of gambling odds on the part of the robber. He took his loot before the passengers had a chance to lose it to the casinos and make the return trip flat. Greyhound was, understandably, less than amused. Fads spread so virulently...
While railroads and some airlines are dropping short-haul routes, Kerrigan plans to pile on more nonstop runs of 200 to 300 miles. In a "Greyhound Savings Time" ad campaign, the line is stressing the difference in fares between air and bus travel. It notes that a round-trip ticket between Chicago and Detroit is $27 cheaper by bus than by air. Other sample savings: $17 between Sacramento and San Francisco, and $25 between New York and Washington...
...fact, Chrysler's outlook has improved far more than these bumpy figures might indicate. Fourth-quarter sales are starting off stronger than at any time in Chrysler history and promise enough profit to haul the corporation into the black for the whole year. The company is now covering its costs well enough to make heavy repayments of short-term debt without drawing on its new lines of bank credit. Debt repayable within a year has shrunk from a mountainous $673 million last March to a manageable $369 million...

They ran into a little trouble at Logan, though, when FBI agents arrived with dogs to scent shaving cream. They reportedly made quite a haul. A closer investigation of the costumes followed, leading to the discovery of one Peter Pan, one Captain Hook, and 40 Tinker Belles. One of the Quakers apparently intended to masquerade as a football player...
Railpax seems likely to save some passenger trains from becoming extinct, but it will hardly work miracles in restoring long-haul service, which attracts mainly sightseers. Few passengers are still willing to spend three days traveling coast to coast, or two days from the Northeast to Texas. The legislation empowers Transportation Secretary John Volpe to decide what routes Railpax must serve at the outset. He will probably order continued service over heavily traveled corridors, particularly between Boston and Washington. Some long runs that draw varying amounts of patronage-for example, the Northeast to Florida, Chicago to New Orleans...
