...scientific team assembled by writers Stephen Hauser and Paul Attanasio, adapting an old Michael Crichton novel, is ragtag and cranky. The chief credential of its psychologist (Dustin Hoffman) is a report on how to handle alien encounters, which he admits cribbing largely from sci-fi tales. The biochemist (Sharon Stone) is a pill popper. The mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson) is a cynic, the astrophysicist (Liev Schreiber) is twittily lusting after a Nobel Prize, and the team leader (Peter Coyote) needs to try a little tenderness. In short, the possibilities for amusing dysfunction are potentially larger than we usually find...
...Wednesday, for the first class of Science B-29: "Human Behavioral Biology," neither of the two professors, Irven DeVore and Marc Hauser, chose to show up. More than 500 students were welcomed to the class with a taped video of one professor giving a lecture he had recorded two weeks earlier. Students were notified that the instructors were unavailable due to the fact that they were out in the field conducting the latest research. Is this just the latest example of Faculty members prioritizing their own research over their work with undergraduates...
...Susan Hauser, assistant dean of Yale College, said that there, although the dorms close for the holiday break, masters, deans, the New Haven Center for International Students and the Yale Club of New Haven help international students find housing...
...Hauser's sense of wonder was tempered with serious concern. Multiple pregnancies frequently end in miscarriage or stillbirth, and the risk multiplies with the number of fetuses. While septuplets have been delivered a handful of times, in no case have they all lived more than a few days or weeks. So Hauser, along with the McCaugheys' perinatologists, Drs. Paula Mahone and Karen Drake, patiently explained to the McCaugheys the standard option in such a situation: they could, if they chose, undergo "selective reduction"--a medical euphemism for the aborting of several fetuses so the others would stand a better chance...
None of that was on the McCaugheys' minds when they first went to see Hauser last spring. Their daughter Mikayla was 16 months old, and all they wanted was to give her a brother or sister. Bobbi had had trouble conceiving Mikayla; she had finally become pregnant after spending a fruitless year on one fertility drug and then switching to the more powerful Metrodin. Neither she nor Kenny wanted to wait a year this time, so she went on Metrodin right away--though, on Hauser's advice, at a lower dose. But while doctors can carefully control the number...
