...Frustrated. Directed by Peter Hall and designed by John Bury, the Royal Shakespeare Company's production is impeccable. Vivien Merchant (Mrs. Harold Pinter), who is to Pinter's plays what Clara Schumann was to her husband's music, plays the woman with a mixture of hauteur and girlish romanticism. She makes the character both menacing and slightly spurious. Colin Blakely is blessedly funny and touching as the bluff husband whose male pride is aroused but baffled. He is apparently victorious but eventually frustrated. In the role of the mysterious wife, Dorothy Tutin catches the unconscious cruelty...
...Though outsiders frequently come equipped with better technical skills, only rarely can they do a better job of evangelizing. One recent exception occurred in Ghana, where there are at least 50 distinct languages. Black evangelists from Ghanaian towns could not talk to the rural, up-country Chokosis without noticeable hauteur. But a white United Church of Christ missionary, Alfred Krass, learned Chokosis and converted hundreds...
...Harvard will not be marred by the expression of any feeling less creditable than honorable emulation. The students of Yale must certainly see, as we do, that the true interests of Harvard and Yale are identical, that our traditions are similar, and our sympathies common. Suddenly, I found myself defending Harvard's tough-mindedness, its neglect of graduate students in the name of intellectual individualism. I was rebuking this man of the West with all the hauteur of the mythical Harvard man ! It was only a final touch of logic that the Chamber of Commerce pamphlet which described the town in which this man's college was located, showed, in its street guide, that every street and avenue bore the name of an Eastern college (a Harvard...
...look at the hauteur theory through the study of the careers of two of America's greatest filmmakers, D. W. Griffith and John Ford. A close look will be taken at the role of the central creative personality and the ways in which artistic individuality survives the act of filmmaking. Five films of each director will be shown, among them Griffith's "True Heart Suzie," "Wav Down East," "Sorrows of Satan." "The Struggle," and Ford's "The Long Voyage Home," "My Darling Clementine," "The Sun Shines Bright," and "Seven Women...
