...only four films to release through their own new company in late 2005 and two of them, Mrs. Henderson Presents and TransAmerica, picked up Best Actress nominations. Dench, taking her fifth acting nomination in nine years, can get nods even for walk-through performances, displays of the Dench hauteur, which is what her role here is. Huffman has a distinct shot: beloved in three strong acting communities (Chicago, New York and L.A.), blending mainstream work (in TV's Desperate Housewives) with indie stuff (TransAmerica), plus she plays a sympathetic, slightly freakish outsider, in a role requiring lots of makeup. Movie romance is a snapshot of beautiful women turning grief into glamour, passion into pictures. The camera here (mainly manned by cinematographer Christopher Doyle) monitors their hearts like a fond lover, capturing Gong's fire-and-ice hauteur, Faye Wong's elfin radiance, Zhang's panoply of pouts, flirtations and surrendering smiles. Even if a Chinese movie doesn't sound like your idea of summer fun, give 2046 a chance. ...role, tinged equally with self-pity and pluck, is the production's strongest. Close impeccably portrays a woman whose compassion leads her into ruinous contradictions. Waterston disappoints a bit, wobbling in his accent and never quite finding the passion, only the hysteria, of his man. Jones' smirky hauteur is chilling as his destructive tactics succeed. Bancroft got to exercise her hauteur in a few later films (The Turning Point, Agnes of God), but her longest and most piquant role was as wife, muse and keeper of Mel Brooks.
