Both of Polis' opponents say his sexual orientation has not been a central issue in the race. "No. Irrelevant," says Matt Moseley, Fitz-Gerald's spokesman. "We haven't heard a lot about it either positive or negative," says Shafroth campaign manager Lynea Hansen. "Polis hasn't made it an issue either, which is why it hasn't been raised much...

...victory is sweet for the U.S. team and for Phelps. "We haven't won that relay in the last 20 years," said Reese. "This was a tough one to win, but those are always the best ones to win." For Phelps, who swam the opening leg, it means his gold medal count now stands at two, a fact that helps explain his almost primal roar when Lezak finally came to the wall. Foreign coaches haven't fared as well in China. The well-regarded German coach of China's canoeing and kayaking team was sacked less than two months before the Olympics were to begin. In July, the Serbian manager of China's Olympic men's soccer squad was also axed. And last spring, the French coach of the women's national soccer team was let go in a particularly frosty manner - her dismissal came by email. All three foreigners were replaced by local counterparts. The Chinese sports system, it turns out, prefers "Made in China...
