...These education theorists have replaced knowledge with process, phonics with whole language, merit with relevance and rigor with self-esteem. As a teacher who plans to retire soon, I shudder to think what the future holds for our youth if these college-of-education charlatans continue to reign. JOHANNA HAVER Phoenix, Ariz...
This has been a top year for indie cinema. Fertile talents have emerged: Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex), Darren Aronofsky ([Pi]) Tommy O'Haver (Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss). Familiar renegades prove they can expand on their obsessions: Hal Hartley in Henry Fool, Neil LaBute in Your Friends and Neighbors. An old timer like James Ivory displays renewed grace with A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries. And this fall four filmmakers who made a collective splash in 1995 and '96 are presenting works that offer hope for a better, bolder American moviescape...
Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, a bubbly musical comedy romance that wowed 'em at Sundance, is as modest as it is beguiling; its director credit reads A TOMMY O'HAVER TRIFLE. As O'Haver says of Kiss, "The idea was to set up these labels of straight and gay, and then by the end of the film forget that Billy is gay. The labels don't really mean that much." That is an aim of the new Gay Wave: to tear off the labels...
...studied innocence of MGM's teen tuners starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, but with a little sex. And even that is so sweet it's tweet. (In Broadway Damage two young lovers climb up a tree for their first kiss. No kidding.) It makes sense that O'Haver, who evokes the retro spirit with such expert elan, has signed with Universal Pictures to direct a movie of the Archie comic book. We can't wait to see if Archie gets to pining over Jughead...
