George Ariyoshi was elected the state's Governor, and Fujio ("Fudge") Matsuda was appointed president of the University of Hawaii. Both men are nisei, or second-generation Americans; Ariyoshi's father had been a sumo wrestler in Japan. Today only two non-A.J.A.s hold major elective offices in Hawaii: U.S. Senator Hiram Fong, who is of Chinese ancestry, and Frank Fasi, mayor of Honolulu, an Italian American. Sometimes there's more to Vaude-Rocker Alice Cooper than meets the eye shadow. After a three-week Hawaiian vacation, Cooper came to New York last week and was ... well, swept up in a city cleanup campaign. Joining some 300 volunteers, the rock star spent a couple of hours clearing away the garbage in one of Manhattan's parks. "I'm an old sentimentalist about New York," explained Cooper. They are Financier Sol Linowitz; Marietta Tree, a city planner and former chief of the U.S. delegation to the U.N.; and Lowell Dillingham, scion of an old Hawaiian family. Only Dillingham appears cast in the elegant Trippe mold. Though a Boston Peabody, Mrs. Tree is known for her liberal views. Linowitz, a sagacious businessman, is expected to give Seawell tough-minded support...

...capital, Olympia, by July 4, 1976. But most Bicentennial projects in the West are drawn from the region's own history and heritage. Alaskans are rebuilding the Tlingit and Haida tribal houses in Angoon and restoring a log headquarters built in 1793 by Russian fur traders in Kodiak. Hawaiians are constructing a 60-ft., double-hulled sailing canoe in which a crew of 24 will leave on April 1, 1976, for a month-long voyage to Tahiti and back to demonstrate how the Polynesians discovered the Hawaiian Islands...
