Last fall A.J.A.s took over two principal bastions of Caucasian (haole in Hawaiian) power and status. George Ariyoshi was elected the state's Governor, and Fujio ("Fudge") Matsuda was appointed president of the University of Hawaii. Both men are nisei, or second-generation Americans; Ariyoshi's father had been a sumo wrestler in Japan. Today only two non-A.J.A.s hold major elective offices in Hawaii: U.S. Senator Hiram Fong, who is of Chinese ancestry, and Frank Fasi, mayor of Honolulu, an Italian American. A rundown of other important Hawaiian politicians reads like an A.J.A...
Sometimes there's more to Vaude-Rocker Alice Cooper than meets the eye shadow. After a three-week Hawaiian vacation, Cooper came to New York last week and was ... well, swept up in a city cleanup campaign. Joining some 300 volunteers, the rock star spent a couple of hours clearing away the garbage in one of Manhattan's parks. "I'm an old sentimentalist about New York," explained Cooper. That may be just as well. While the singer was away from home, his new $150,000 house in West Los Angeles burned to the ground...
...corner, loud. The band, which plays all day long on the cornrt below my friend's apartment, is run by the cotoner of New Orieans, a man named Dr.Frank Minyard who decided one day that being coroner was boring and so called some of his friends, put on a Hawaiian shirt, and went down to the corner of Royal and St.Peter Streets and began to play mediocre jazz, which although he is still coroner, he continues to do almost every nice day, to the unending annoyance of the junkshop owners. Dr.Minyard says he is reviving the spirit of New Orieans...
Seawell has hand-picked replacements for Lindbergh, Trippe and former Treasury Secretary John Connally, who also will not stand for reelection. They are Financier Sol Linowitz; Marietta Tree, a city planner and former chief of the U.S. delegation to the U.N.; and Lowell Dillingham, scion of an old Hawaiian family. Only Dillingham appears cast in the elegant Trippe mold. Though a Boston Peabody, Mrs. Tree is known for her liberal views. Linowitz, a sagacious businessman, is expected to give Seawell tough-minded support...
...capital, Olympia, by July 4, 1976. But most Bicentennial projects in the West are drawn from the region's own history and heritage. Alaskans are rebuilding the Tlingit and Haida tribal houses in Angoon and restoring a log headquarters built in 1793 by Russian fur traders in Kodiak. Hawaiians are constructing a 60-ft., double-hulled sailing canoe in which a crew of 24 will leave on April 1, 1976, for a month-long voyage to Tahiti and back to demonstrate how the Polynesians discovered the Hawaiian Islands...
