Scared into near reclusion by Mark David Chapman's killing of Lennon in December 1980, Harrison spent most of his time meditating, music making, gardening and watching Formula One races on the telly at Friar Park, his extraordinary estate in Henley-on-Thames, and at his hideaway on the Hawaiian island of Maui. He ventured out occasionally to record and play with the Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup that included Dylan, Tom Petty and others. But various legal battles took up even more of his time. Fast forward to my first year at Harvard, living one floor above this Hawaiian guy who always had to wake up early for football practice. On "work" trips to Indonesia and Australia, he would entertain his buddies with mellow acoustic tunes, but never considered a career in music. "Because of where I grew up, music...
...decades later, the field is trying to catch up with him. Vitousek's studies of the Hawaiian Islands--the world's most remote archipelago and a place humans discovered only 1,500 years ago--have yielded some intriguing findings. While the arrival of new species has had the greatest impact on Hawaii's unique flora and fauna, what amazed Vitousek was how the world reaches out to touch even the most remote spots. In one celebrated study, he and his colleagues analyzed soil and rock chemistry at volcanic sites ranging from 300 years to 4.1 million years old. Plants...
