...latest round of activity caught scientists by surprise. Though volcanologists have been able to predict almost to the hour when the volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands will erupt, Mount St. Helens presents a more difficult problem for would-be prognosticators. The molten rock, or magma, underneath the Washington volcano is a thicker, silica-rich material (unlike the less viscous molten basalt of the Hawaiian chain); more pressure must build up before the hot gases trapped within it are released. Thus the mountain erupts infrequently and violently...

...business, but opportunities were few, and there was no other in prospect. Right, I would send it. The heart had surfaced from one anxiety only to plunge into another. There was no rest. But - two novels of mine appearing simultaneously in the West? A double? I felt like the Hawaiian surf riders described by Jack London, standing upright on a smooth board, with nothing to hold on to, nothing to hamper me, on the crest of the ninth wave, my lungs bursting from the rush of air. I divined, I sensed, that it would work! It would come...

...releases enough heat to cause explosive ejections of steam, fumes and ashes. The mountain literally blows its top. Eruptions may also occur where the plates tear apart. One such place is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, site of Iceland's volcanoes. Finally, there are volcanoes, like those of the Hawaiian Islands, that form far from plate boundaries. One theory is that permanent "hot spots" lie under these areas, deep inside the earth's mantle...

Back at the plant's main gate, on Rte 1 next to the Hawaiian Garden Motel, other demonstrators attempt a "blockade." For the most part, these are the people who think fence-cutting is too militant. From nearby woods they have gathered limbs and rusting metal appliances, which they pile neatly in front of the gate, offerings to the god of civil disobedience. True to their part of the script, police come out from behind the gate, from a cordon, and let bulldozers push debris inside the fence, where dumptrucks haul it away. Across the street, Seabrook police--small town...

...first station is being built at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Others will be located near Taegu, South Korea, on the Hawaiian island of Maui, and at sites in the Indian Ocean and the Eastern Atlantic regions. Known as GEODSS (for ground-based electro-optical deep space surveillance), the system will provide almost live-action portraits of distant satellites and permit virtually instantaneous identification of any mysterious intruders in the night...
