...alerted to an early projection that Labor was out, he could hardly believe it. "No, no," he said. "That's wrong." Solidly committed to a resumption of Geneva peace talks by autumn, the Carter Administration had assumed that it would be dealing with Shimon Peres?who was admittedly a hawk as Defense Minister, but who had expressed in principle his belief that Israel could return occupied territories in exchange for real peace. Begin's determined, possessive attitude toward the West Bank and Gaza?ruling out any possibility of establishing there a Palestinian homeland, which is one of Carter's essential...

...Uprising-remains one of the most fascinating city walks in the world, a gauntlet of boutiques, cafés and attractive women in the traditional ao dai-a long, slit-skirted dress. In sharp contrast with Hanoi, where I found nearly everything in short supply, Saigon's peddlers hawk an abundance of goods, from government-sponsored lottery tickets to ceramic elephants and noodle soup. The 250-seat Rex Cabaret continues to operate, featuring some of the performers who once entertained American troops. On a recent evening, for example, Cathy Hue belted out her rendition of Granada to about...

Though widely regarded as a hawk, Peres in his recent pronouncements takes an increasingly moderate, statesmanlike approach toward Israel's relations with both enemies and allies. In the main entrance bay-the Milestones of Flight Gallery-are the Wrights' Kitty Hawk Flyer, the first aircraft to achieve manned, powered flight, and the Spirit of St. Louis, in which Charles Lindbergh, need anyone be reminded, flew the Atlantic solo...

...Girl Friday. I feel that I should include at least one Hollywood comedy whose perspective is ultimately uncritical, since these are among my favorite types, and this Howard Hawks film about journalism is one of the best of the genre. Starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel, the film sets up an unresolveable conflict and proceeds to resolve it romantically (though at the cost of turning Russell into "one of the boys.") Nevertheless, the film's hysterical pace betrays its sensitivity to real emotional conflicts, as well as Hawk's attachment to the male professional communities of irrational shared value which...
