...Cheney's objections to Iran went well beyond its uranium-enrichment activities, to include Iran's policies toward Israel and the U.S., its activities in Iraq, its suppression of domestic opposition and what he called its drive for "hegemonic power" in the region - a term echoed by the less hawkish Rice in her congressional testimony...

...attack by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) separatists based in north Iraq that killed 12 Turkish soldiers. It was the third large-scale attack in recent weeks. Eight Turkish soldiers are still missing after the incident. Sunday's attack may well prove the last straw for Turkey's hawkish military - NATO's second largest army after the U.S. - which has been readying to cross the border into north Iraq in pursuit of the PKK for several months. Public outrage over a mounting death toll finally led Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to approve an incursion last week. Meanwhile, U.S. and Iraqi...

Advani derided Singh as the "weakest Prime Minister India has ever had," mocking his "opportunistic alliance" with the Left Front. Of course, the BJP had also agitated vociferously against the deal, but many suspect that had the hawkish, U.S.-friendly BJP been in power, they would have more likely embraced the nuclear treaty...

...Unlike on North Korea, a strong domestic political constituency backs a more hawkish line on Iran. Last spring, for example, in response to pressure from strongly pro-Israel Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi removed a provision in a military spending bill that would have required the President to seek congressional approval before attacking Iran. More recently, Congress moved out ahead of the Administration's own position on taking action against European companies doing business with Iran, and on declaring Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. With Israeli hawks warning that Iran threatens Israel's very existence, the pressure against...
