Mozart: Idomeneo, Rè di Creta (soloists and chorus of the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Meinhard von Zallinger conducting; the Haydn Society, 8 sides LP). The 13th of his 22 theater works, Idomeneo was Mozart's favorite-if no one else's; it has only had one U.S. production, at the Berkshire Music Center (TIME, Aug. 18, 1947). Although there is much to marvel at, most listeners will find Idomeneo loaded with tiresome recitative and lacking in the sparkle of Don Giovanni or The Marriage of Figaro. Last week his Parisian fans, overflowing onto the stage of the Theéátre des Champs Elysées, heard Virtuoso Segovia at his nimble-fingered best. Starting his program with a Bach fugue, he played transcriptions of works by Frescobaldi, Scarlatti, Haydn and Mozart, making his six-stringed instrument sound as brilliant as a harpsichord or as plaintive as a lute. ...Sewanee's All Saints' Chapel last week, a capacity crowd of 600 heard the second concert in the festival's survey. The audience was lulled into false security with some Haydn and Mozart quartets, then given the business: Walter Piston's new (1949) piano quintet, with Harris' wife Johana ("Lady Jo") at the piano.
