...match that, so they set out to do better-by providing their picture with one of the screen's most gifted young directors, Delbert (Bachelor Party) Mann, and with what is surely the year's most brilliantly glittering cast. For the main roles they hired Rita Hayworth, Deborah Kerr, Burt Lancaster and David Niven. And for the supporting parts they got four of Britain's most distinguished performers: Wendy Killer, Gladys Cooper, Cathleen Nesbitt and Felix Aylmer...

...explain the scene. The explanation is the movie proper. It involves the characters in a voyage on a terrifically dilapidated steamer, a ride in a car with a built-in champagne bucket, and a tangle with a band of surly Arabs whose chief is lovesick over photographs of Rita Hayworth. A prim young Englishman's wife (Jennifer Jones) is snowed by the inscrutable Bogart, and Bogie's wife (Lollobrigida) is similarly attracted to the Britisher. He found out all right: the only quarterback for Chuck Chamberlain was Chuck Chamberlain. "My God," he recalls, "the Welcome Wagon came out to see Mrs. Chamberlain when we had the electric meter hooked up, but nobody from the Republican high command came around to see me." From House Republican...

...soon found herself in another romance with Aly Khan. Marriage appeared to be close, but it didn't work out. He rebuffed her plea to quit intercontinental fun and games; his father, the Aga Khan, sternly opposed another movie-actress marriage after Aly's divorce from Rita Hayworth. With her need for stability unmet. Gene's anxiety grew worse. In New York she walked out on a TV commitment to play Nora in Ibsen's A Doll's House, the part of a woman squashed by the strictures of society and an overbearing husband...
