...Israeli fort on Tel Shams commands a broad valley that runs eastward toward Damascus. From the hills, when the morning haze lifts, strong glasses bring the capital into view. In the past, Israeli cannon around Tel Shams had shattered Damascus windowpanes. But now, turning their backs on Syria, the last Israeli troops were ready to head west out of the territory they had seized in October's costly counteroffensive...

...just read too many novels, like Madame Bovary; he has read too many novels like Madame Bovary. He is condemned to work out the hassles of his marriage in a long, unfinished and unfinishable novel. His wife Maureen--whose perfumed adoration and melodramatic rages recall Charlotte Haze, Lolita's mother--is the instrument which most threatens his manhood, most demands defense through the only means he knows--writing. Maureen claims that she could be Tarnopol's Muse, if only he'd let her. The problem is exactly that she is his Muse, irresistibly, inescapably. She is what his literary psychoanalysis...

...surface and atmosphere I partly mean the Mississippi spring greenery, the driving rain, twilight haze, and old screen doors through which cinematographer Jean Boffety aims his camera. But also I mean the views director Robert Altman gives us of Bowie and Keetchie, the central pair of lovers, views which are confined to a few conversations, a love scene or two, and above all the faces of actors Keith Carradine and Shelley Duvall, which are as beautiful in their simplicity and awkwardness as the country around them is in all its rural roughness. Both give excellent performances, but Duvall particularly makes...

While Radcliffe women receive Harvard degrees, it is misleading to say that Radcliffe is but a part of Harvard. Out of the haze of the Radcliffe "agreement" with Harvard, a number of programs such as Education for Action survive with three "retained functions" outstanding: the Radcliffe Institute, Financial Aid and Women's Education. "Retained functions" means that Radcliffe staffs these programs, determines their policies, and, significantly, foots the bill...
