...cable and DBS can't ignore the digital future. So they'll probably have to upgrade eventually to support digital traffic--although the additional bandwidth will cut into the number of channels they can offer--while cable services like HBO retool to produce digital shows. A few years hence, your local cable or satellite guy will start offering, alongside the usual 60 analog channels, a tier of scintillating HDTV programming, with brilliant color and sound...

Christopher Reeve's days as a leading man are far from over. The actor, who recently finished the HBO film In the Gloaming, his directorial debut, has been offered the role of the wheelchair-bound nosy neighbor in a remake of the 1954 thriller Rear Window. "It's going to be a real showcase of what people in [Reeve's] condition can do," says exec producer Robert Gaulin. "Chris is extremely excited about it." Ellen DeGeneres, for example, has just released her first album, Taste This, a sampler of surprisingly retro stand-up routines (imagine, a comedian who still jokes about airplane food!). A funnier addition to the genre comes from Robert Schimmel (Robert Schimmel Comes Clean), whose X-rated ruminations on bodily functions and anal sex are redeemed...
