From 1844 to 1848 he was tutor in History and instructor in Elocution in Harvard College. From 1848 to 1856 he was at the head of the most successful private school for girls in Boston. In 1856 he was made McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History in Harvard College, as the successor of Jared Sparks. He spent one year in Europe and began his work as professor in 1857. Beginning this morning Bishop Vincent of the Methodist Episcopal Church begins a term of service among us as University preacher. The bishop stands very high in his own denomination and is prominent also as the head of a great movement for popular education. He comes to Harvard a comparative stranger but we feel sure that he will find no less a welcome from this fact.
