...published Paris at Night, a book that instantly secured his reputation and remains one of the milestone volumes of 20th century photography. A picture like L'Avenue de l'observatoire in Autumn is about nothing so much as just dark and light. Its unsentimental main "subject" is a car-headlight beam. A bit as Weegee did in New York City, Brassai hit below the beltways of Paris. What he liked best was what he found in the black sockets of the city, under the bridges and in the streets where hookers dangled their stuff and planted themselves with monumental assurance...
...folk artist, said, "It's been a long road and this does matter. I appreciate it." Meanwhile, veteran folk-rocker Bob Dylan won best album and best contemporary folk album for "Time Out of Mind." His son, Jakob, was honored as a composer of the best rock song, "One Headlight," performed by his band, the Wallflowers. Father and son took home a total of five Grammys, three and two respectively. ...theory of a collision with a second car is supported by evidence collected just inside the tunnel entrance on the night of the accident. In addition to the Fiat Uno taillight fragments, investigators found pieces of the Mercedes' headlight and of the plastic housing of its right-rearview mirror. This debris was found near a 62-ft.-long skid mark that swerves from the right into the left lane. A short distance beyond that is the beginning of a 105-ft.-long skid mark that leads directly into the 13th pillar. All of which tends to support the theory...
...judge again. Meanwhile, investigators are looking at the possibility that the fatal Mercedes may have collided lightly with another car in front of it, causing Paul to lose control. They are intrigued by taillight fragments from a Fiat Uno found near the tunnel entrance. Skidmarks, pieces of the Mercedes' headlight and scratches on its right side also support this idea, as does some eyewitness testimony...
