...measured march to decode the human genome, in short, has turned into a headlong horse race--and the rivalry isn't always polite. The federal genome project, critics carp privately, has been shockingly mismanaged and is sorely lacking in vision. Private efforts, counter some in the public project, are pirate operations that seek to lock critical segments of God's genomic handiwork behind a barricade of patents. Beyond that, they say, speeding up the pace of discovery could lead to slapdash, incomplete results. "If this is the book of life," sniffs Francis Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research...

...pieces, expose and punish. What happened of course is that most people signaled, through polls and then on Election Day, that maybe they didn't feel that way. As the events of December made plain, how those people felt didn't matter much. Even so, Clinton's most headlong pursuers were denied the pleasure of imagining that everybody else was cheering them on. While the President was finally caught in the machinery of impeachment, it was a climax that most people said, again and again, they did not want...

But the place is now, as a town is supposed to be, a work in progress, a setting that can be held to the light...

...Shut up! So the election that was supposed to be another G.O.P. blowout ended with a gain of five House seats for the Democrats, no change in the Senate and the morning-after spectacle of dumbstruck Republicans. They will still rule the next Congress, but with nothing like the headlong confidence they brought there after their triumph in 1994, when they knew in their bones that they were the party with a direct channel to the majority will. What most Americans these days appear to want is reasonable safeguards for a personal well-being that they otherwise wish to pursue...

...trails began to multiply. Twenty an hour, then 30 and 40, until at 5 a.m. the sky erupted in a furious but eerily silent meteor storm that brightened the sky like a pyrotechnic grand finale. Some of the spectators instinctively shielded their faces, startled by the sensation of hurtling headlong into a cloud of flashing debris. An hour--and some 140,000 meteors--later, it was largely over; the storm waned and finally disappeared in the morning light...
