Essentially, the freeze is an interim effort to impose at least some restraint on the headlong Soviet expansion of ICBM forces. In recent years, while the U.S. concentrated on modifying existing missiles rather than building new ones, the Soviets have been adding more than 200 land-and 100 sea-based missiles to their capability every year. By now the Soviets have a 3-to-2 lead in ICBMS, and, under the terms of the freeze, they could have a 40% edge in missile-launching submarines; those margins make conservatives fret that the offensive-missile agreement could be more...
...primaries have begun to blur somewhat, like cities watched from a headlong cross-country train. But if the grueling and expensive system has any merit, it is that it at least determines which candidates travel well. Last week, as the sheer surprise of George McGovern's early primary successes was wearing off, the central questions of his candidacy emerged more clearly: Can he command a winning national constituency once his stands on the issues become widely known and debated? ...northern countryside with lights ablaze at midday and horns blaring. The line stretched to the horizon, and so did its litter: helmets, full ammunition pouches, combat boots, web belts and packs. At the refugee-jammed city of Hué, 24 miles south of Quang Tri, the headlong retreat turned into a rampage. Soldiers who had not eaten in two days looted stores in broad daylight. By night, gangs of deserters started fires and fought drunken skirmishes in the streets...
...virtually bereft of visual humor. Herbert Ross, who was also responsible for T.R. Baskin and the musical remake of Goodbye, Mr. Chips, continues to direct as if he were dressing a window at Bloomingdale's. Everything looks terribly fussy and sterile. Play It Again, Sam badly needs the headlong energy and comic chaos that Allen worked into Take the Money and Run and, especially, Bananas, both of which he directed himself. Allen's comedy is at its best when it is loose and utterly crazy, untouched by human hands. ·Jay Cocks
...have been warned, for as long as I served in Government and now by those in the Nixon Administration, of the "right-wing backlash," the new "loss of China" witch-hunt, that would follow such a move. We have been warned of the headlong flight into "isolationism" or "neoisolationism" that would ensue. Are these real dangers...
